For students interested in joining the military, no college degree is necessary. However, it is a great step for one who wants to become an officer in the military. Aspiring military personnel can attend a traditional college for a degree in military studies or to participate in a Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) program. Another option is to pursue traditional studies at a military college.
Virginia Military Institute (VMI) offers standard majors and minors. All students enroll in ROTC and approximately 18% of graduates pursue military careers. The Citadel is another popular military school that offers an undergraduate minor in international and military affairs.
Many schools offer a bachelor of science in military science that prepares students for careers in the military as commissioned officers. Master's degree programs in military studies are also available.
