Out-of-State Boarding School Options
Hawaii's isolation means families seeking traditional military boarding schools must travel to the mainland:
- Army and Navy Academy (Carlsbad, CA) - Boys, grades 7-12
- St. Catherine's Academy (Anaheim, CA) - Boys, grades TK-8
Hawaii 529 funds can be used for K-12 tuition at these mainland schools (up to $10,000/year), though distributions are subject to Hawaii state income tax.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any military boarding schools in Hawaii?
No. Hawaii has no traditional military boarding schools. The state has Youth Challenge (for at-risk teens) and Job Challenge (for YCA graduates), but these are intervention programs, not college-prep military schools. Hawaii does have strong JROTC programs in many public high schools.
What's the difference between Youth Challenge and Job Challenge?
Youth Challenge Academy (Kapolei) is the first-entry program for at-risk youth ages 16-18—focus is on credit recovery and GED. Job Challenge Academy (Hilo) is a post-graduate vocational program for YCA graduates ages 17-20—focus is on career certifications. You cannot apply directly to Job Challenge; you must graduate from Youth Challenge first.
What's the closest military boarding school to Hawaii?
The closest options are in California (Army and Navy Academy, St. Catherine's), requiring mainland travel. Hawaii's geographic isolation makes out-of-state boarding a significant commitment.
