The Verdict

TMI Episcopal offers a distinctive model: a rigorous college-preparatory school where the military program is entirely optional. Located on an 80-acre hilltop campus on the edge of the Texas Hill Country, TMI is the flagship private school of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas and the oldest Episcopal-sponsored college-preparatory school in the Southwest.

Founded in 1893 and once known as West Texas Military Academy—nicknamed "West Point on the Rio Grande"—TMI produced General Douglas MacArthur as its first valedictorian. Today, approximately one-third of students voluntarily join the Corps of Cadets, an Army JROTC program that has been named Honor Unit with Distinction for over a decade.

Daily Schedule

TMI operates on a structured daily schedule centered on academic excellence and community. The day begins with daily chapel services in All Saints Chapel, reflecting the school's Episcopal foundation. Academic classes fill the core of the day, followed by afternoon athletics, activities, or Corps of Cadets training for JROTC participants. Boarding students in grades 8-12 have options for five-day or seven-day residential programs. Evening study hall provides supervised academic preparation. The Residential Life House Program assigns students to houses where upper-class Prefects mentor younger students, creating a family-style living community.

Discipline Model

TMI employs a developmental discipline model rooted in Episcopal values and the teachings of Jesus Christ. The Residential Life program emphasizes respect, consideration for others, and servant leadership. Boarding students progress through a Developmental Program and Independent Program within the house model, earning increasing responsibilities. Prefects serve as student leaders who mentor peers and liaise between students and staff. For Corps of Cadets members, the JROTC structure adds military-style accountability with cadet ranks and formations, but participation remains optional for all students.

Where Graduates Go

As an Honor Unit with Distinction—the highest JROTC recognition—for over a decade, TMI cadets can apply directly to U.S. Service Academies (West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy) without the congressional nomination typically required. This unique advantage has produced consistent appointments to the academies. Graduates attend prestigious universities including MIT, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins, and Baylor.
