The Verdict

Willamette Leadership Academy (WLA) stands as Oregon's premier military-style charter school, providing a structured educational environment for middle and high school students who thrive under discipline and accountability. Originally opened by PYCO and now operating independently since 2021, WLA is housed in the former Goshen Elementary building in Eugene, serving cadets from across Lane County and beyond—from Drain to Lebanon and Walterville to Veneta.

Unlike traditional schools, WLA employs Staff NCOs—all former or current U.S. Armed Forces members—who work alongside certified teachers holding military-style officer ranks. The school's unique approach combines academic rigor with the time-tested values of the military: leadership, self-discipline, consistency, structure, and personal growth. Colors are raised at 0800 and lowered at 1530 most days, marking the rhythm of a school day designed to transform students into responsible citizens and future leaders.

Daily Schedule

The day begins with a drop-off window from 0730-0755, with Morning Formation at 0800. All cadets report in proper uniform for inspection before the first academic class at 0815. Core classes run throughout the day with structured transitions in hallway formation. Afternoon Formation occurs at 1530 (1415 on Wednesdays). All cadets must depart campus by 1600. School-wide Basic Training happens three times per year—at the beginning of the school year, post-winter break, and post-spring break—to teach and reinforce the fundamental concepts of the program.

Discipline Model

WLA employs a military-style discipline model focused on accountability and positive reinforcement rather than punishment. Staff NCOs—all veterans of at least one branch of the United States Armed Forces—work alongside officer-ranked teachers to maintain order and develop cadets. Military-style corrective actions such as push-ups, sit-ups, and running laps redirect unwanted behaviors. Cadets advance through ranks starting as CDT (Cadet), progressing to PVT (Private) upon completing Basic Training, and earning Specialist rank by passing Drill and Ceremony tests, PT tests, maintaining passing grades, and holding leadership positions. The Battalion Commander (BC) and Command Sergeant Major (CSM) oversee the Battalion Commanders Corrective Action (BCCA) hearings for severe behavioral issues.
