Bridgeport Military Academy
Bridgeport, CT
"Service to Others Above Self"
The Verdict
Bridgeport Military Academy stands as Connecticut's premier public military-themed high school, uniquely blending Navy JROTC training with first responder career pathways. Founded in 2013 on the fringe of the University of Bridgeport campus, BMA graduated its inaugural class in 2017 and has since become a beacon of opportunity for students from Bridgeport and surrounding communities.
The academy draws cadets from across Connecticut through the Open Choice Program, with students traveling from Ansonia, Milford, Monroe, Shelton, Stratford, Trumbull, and West Haven to pursue military and first responder careers. In 2025, BMA made history when Cadet Master Chief Petty Officer J'Kai Lake became the first student in the academy's history to receive nominations to all four U.S. service academies: West Point, the Air Force Academy, the Merchant Marine Academy, and the U.S. Naval Academy.

Daily Schedule
The day begins with daily formation as the entire school population assembles in uniform. All students wear uniforms once weekly on the designated uniform day and participate in a dedicated drill period. Academic classes run throughout the day with structured periods. Freshmen and sophomores focus on NJROTC naval science curriculum, building the foundation of military discipline through marching, uniform inspections, and team-building activities. Upper-classmen can advance into specialized first responder coursework. The program emphasizes attention to detail during uniform inspections and proper military bearing throughout the day.
Discipline Model
BMA operates as a school of discipline rather than a school for discipline. The academy enforces moderate structure through uniform and grooming standards integrated into the school curriculum. All students in grades 9 and 10 participate in the Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps and are referred to as cadets. Throughout the program, cadets are graded on uniform appearance, manners, and bearing. All cadets participate in marching, stationary drill, physical training, etiquette classes, and team-building activities with expectations increasing each year. The NJROTC program instills core Navy values including accountability, self-discipline, and respect, though there is no obligation to join the military after graduation.
