The Verdict

Founded in 1889 by Civil War veteran Charles Jefferson Wright at the foot of Storm King Mountain, New York Military Academy is one of America's oldest military boarding schools. Located just miles from West Point, NYMA has produced presidents, Oscar-winning filmmakers, Broadway legends, and Fortune 500 CEOs.

The academy's Honor Code—shared with West Point—states that "A cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those who do," forming the cornerstone of character development that has shaped leaders for over 130 years.

Daily Schedule

Days begin at 6:00 a.m. and conclude at 10:00 p.m. Cadets attend classes, participate in mandatory athletics (interscholastic or intramural), and complete nightly mentored study hall. Closed weekends include additional leadership training, drill and ceremony practice, and barracks maintenance. Cadets in good standing may apply for weekend furlough during open weekends.

Discipline Model

The Corps of Cadets operates under the NYMA Honor Code shared with West Point: 'A cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those who do.' Self-discipline, leadership, and citizenship are integrated into daily life. As cadets advance in rank, they assume increasing responsibility for supervising, leading, and instructing fellow cadets through the cadet chain of command. JROTC participation and the military program are required for graduation.
