The Verdict

The New Mexico Youth Challenge Academy stands as the Land of Enchantment's premier second-chance program for at-risk youth, transforming lives in Roswell since 2001. What sets NMYCA apart is its unique partnership with Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, enabling cadets to earn 12-18 college credits while completing their HiSET—a head start most high school graduates never receive.

Living by the motto "If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you," the program's newly renovated military-style barracks and 24-month post-residential mentoring phase (one of the longest in the nation) demonstrate New Mexico's commitment to not just graduation, but sustained success. With over 50 class cycles completed, NMYCA has proven that structured discipline combined with genuine educational opportunity can redirect young lives toward productive citizenship.

Daily Schedule

Cadets follow a highly structured military-style schedule throughout the 22-week residential phase. A typical day begins with physical training at 0500 hours (5:00 AM), followed by morning chow and GED/HiSET academic classes. Afternoons include vocational training and community service projects. The environment is designed to eliminate outside distractions—cadets have no access to personal cell phones, social media, television, or radios. Family communication is limited to encourage focus on personal development, though designated Family Days and mail correspondence are permitted. The program runs two cycles annually: mid-January through mid-June, and mid-July through mid-December.

Discipline Model

NMYCA operates in a quasi-military environment that emphasizes structure, accountability, and self-improvement through the chain of command. The program is explicitly NOT a boot camp, detention center, or treatment facility—participation is entirely voluntary, requiring buy-in from both cadets and their families. The Academy maintains a strict tobacco, drug, and alcohol-free environment with mandatory testing. Cadets progress through ranks and earn privileges based on demonstrated growth across the eight core components: academic excellence, physical fitness, health and hygiene, citizenship, life coping skills, job skills, leadership/followership, and service to community.

Program Outcomes

Success Metrics

NMYCA partners with Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell to provide cadets with genuine college credit opportunities. All cadets are enrolled in vocational-technical certificate programs and can earn 12-18 college credits during the residential phase while working toward their HiSET credential or recovering academic credits. Post-residential placement includes higher education, employment, vocational training, or military service. The national Youth Challenge program achieves a 60% GED/diploma completion rate—nearly double the 41% average pass rate for the same at-risk population.

Post-Program Pathways

N/A (program focuses on HiSET completion, vocational training, and career readiness)

Note: Youth Challenge programs focus on GED completion, credit recovery, and life skills development—not traditional college prep metrics.

Physical Training

Physical Fitness Program

Daily physical training is a cornerstone of the NMYCA experience, beginning each day at 0500 hours (5:00 AM). Physical fitness is one of the eight core components of the program, with all cadets required to participate regardless of prior fitness level. The PT program is designed to build endurance, strength, discipline, and teamwork through military-styled physical training, running, and organized sports—instilling a lifelong commitment to physical wellbeing. Additional physical activity occurs through drill and ceremony practice, community service projects, and structured recreation.

Facilities

The Roswell campus features newly renovated military-style barracks, academic classrooms, physical training areas, drill fields, and vocational training spaces. The partnership with Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell provides access to additional educational resources. The rural New Mexico setting offers ample outdoor space for physical training, drill practice, and team-building activities.

Note: Youth Challenge programs emphasize physical fitness as one of the Eight Core Components, focusing on building endurance, strength, and healthy habits rather than varsity athletics.
