Daily Schedule

Incoming midshipmen begin with Plebe Summer, a rigorous seven-week indoctrination program that transforms civilians into midshipmen. Days start before dawn with Physical Education Program (PEP), followed by morning formation and meals where plebes are quizzed on required knowledge from Reef Points. The schedule includes close-order drill, seamanship, swimming, martial arts, weapons handling, and extensive memorization of Naval history and traditions. Afternoons feature athletic period and additional training evolutions. Every night concludes with 30 minutes of free time for letter writing, the singing of Navy Blue and Gold, and mandatory lights out at 2145 (9:45 PM). During the academic year, midshipmen follow a demanding schedule balancing a full course load, military training, and mandatory athletics.

Discipline Model

The Midshipman Honor Concept governs all conduct at USNA. Unlike prescriptive honor codes at other academies, the Honor Concept is a broader appeal to personal integrity, stating that midshipmen 'stand for that which is right,' 'tell the truth and ensure that the full truth is known,' 'do not lie,' 'do not cheat,' and 'respect the property of others.' Developed in 1953 by Midshipman H. Ross Perot, the system emphasizes self-governance and peer leadership. The Brigade Honor Committee, composed of elected midshipmen leaders, handles disciplinary matters. The concept allows midshipmen to confront honor violations without formal reporting, emphasizing education and redemption alongside accountability.

Mandatory PT

All midshipmen must pass the Physical Readiness Test (PRT) each semester. The PRT consists of two minutes of cadence push-ups (maximum 60), a timed isometric plank hold, and a 1.5-mile run (standards: 10:30 for men, 12:40 for women). Alternative options include a 500-yard swim or 10-minute bicycle ergometer test. Failure to pass may result in separation. Beyond PRT requirements, midshipmen complete 90 minutes of strenuous physical training five days per week, including interval running, obstacle courses, boxing, wrestling, martial arts, and swimming.

Facilities

Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (34,000 seats) hosts football, lacrosse, and sprint football. Alumni Hall (5,710 seats), dedicated in 1991, is home to basketball and wrestling.
