Carver Military Academy
Chicago, IL
"Excellence Is Expected"
The Verdict
When Carver Area High School transformed in 2000, it became the first existing public high school in America to convert to a military academy—a bold experiment in urban education reform. Named for scientist George Washington Carver, this Chicago Public Schools JROTC magnet on the far South Side has since produced NFL and NBA athletes while maintaining Honor Unit of Distinction status, most recently scoring 597 out of 600 points on formal inspection.
The military model here is not about combat preparation—it is about structure, discipline, and creating pathways to college for students from underserved communities.
