Three Paths to a Military High School
Most military high schools in America are tuition-free public schools — not the private boarding academies families usually picture when they search for a "military high school" or "high school military academy." There are three distinct paths:
- Public and charter military academies — free day schools with JROTC structure, uniforms, and cadet leadership
- Private military boarding schools — residential college-prep academies ($30,000-$67,000/year)
- Youth Challenge Academies — free 22-week National Guard residential programs for teens 16-18 who are behind in school
Tuition-Free Public Military High Schools
More than 20 public military high schools operate across the country. Admission is typically limited to district or city residents, and there is no tuition.
Chicago runs the nation's largest network — six public military academies including Chicago Military Academy at Bronzeville, Phoenix STEM Military Academy, Rickover Naval Academy, Air Force Academy High School, Carver Military Academy, and Marine Leadership Academy. If your 16-18 year old has fallen behind on credits or dropped out, National Guard Youth Challenge Academies offer a free, residential, quasi-military program in over 30 states — with a path to a diploma, GED, or credit recovery. This is the right door for many families who start out searching for "military school for teens."
